This week we've started doing our Christmas lessons, well except for the third grade students as we are officially cancelling Christmas for them to concentrate on finishing their over due work. Cue lots of BWAHAHAHAHAHAH style evil laughs, well more Scrooge like chuckles, okay just a sympathetic shrug.
But it does make me wonder exactly how much should I tell my students (the ones actually doing Christmas lesson) about Christmas itself? We only have one fifty minute lesson, so how much, for example, about Christianity should I talk about, and if so shouldn't I also mention winter celebrations that pre-date Christianity, or other religious ceremonies that take place this time of year all around the world? The most important thing I've found is that you should never talk at the students for too long as they switch off (signs to look for; eye rolling and doodling, and some drooling) and that prizes are always welcome. I figure that as long as I make it clear Christmas is all about the family coming together and that anyone can celebrate this time of year in their own style all should be well.
Plus the fact we're playing a game that requires NO English should be a welcome.
