School too has been the usual blend of bland, confusion and enjoyment. Last week I had a 3rd grader boy ask me "Do you like sex everyday?" and I'm still not sure how to answer that one. yes/no/maybee/do you??? arhhhhh whats the correct answer...
The next day he came up to me after class and started shouting PENNIS!! PENNNNIIISSS!! I usually handle these type of things (and an English teacher in Japan often encounters these types of things more often than we would like) by either laughing it off, ignoring it or telling them to be quite, however this time I pretended to not understand his pronunciation
Venis? I said
NOOOO PENNISS! he shouted
VENNIS? I asked again which then resulted in him trying to shout it again and again each time me pretending not to understand, eventually he staggered off with a confused look on his face that basically said "I'm sure I said that right, maybe I should practice harder at English rather than look up naughty words in the dictionary".. well I like to think so anyway.
I figure that if he's going to shout these things it might as well be with perfect punctuation!
Today the school has been practicing for our annual upcoming song competition day, so I've been wandering around finding clumps of students gathered around a tape player, more accurately the girls practicing singing whilst the boys are busy pushing each other over. I'm quite looking forward to the competiton as one thing Japanese schools do well (apart from make students practice sports at all times) is festivals and competitions.
This is a photo of the huuuuuge picture that our students made from tiny tiny tiny pieces of paper (some of which I was allowed to glue on/mess up)
